I don’t know Elon Musk, but he was an intern at the first start-up my co-founder worked at, a super-capacitor startup (that I think failed). I assume this was during college:

She would tell me stories. He was quirky, and folks didn’t know what to make of him. Incredibly intelligent, on a very intelligent team. Painfully curious.

She said no one would have predicted this success — but everyone thought his tenacity was singular.

And looking back, always going long and learning. While Elon Musk went into “software” after this early job, his early interest here in energy storage and advanced materials clearly ties to Tesla, SolarCity, and SpaceX. Probably even to going to Mars.
