For me, the life lesson in 2017 was to try to only work with people you’d want to work for — for the next 10 years.

As a start-up CEO, I never really thought about this too much. I was just trying to get things done, find the best people, the best resumes, whoever I could scale the next hill with.

That does work, but if you go long, it’s too hard and tiring. You can only get true scale if you surround yourself with folks you believe are the right ones not just for this year, but for years to come.

People you’d want to work with for 10+ years.

Even if it takes longer, or if you have to pass on a hot investment, or if you have to push on and interview another 10 or 20 VP candidates.

Use this as a filter if you are going long.
