Almost every idea that is in the genre of “this used to really bug me at my last company.”

Don’t get me wrong, this sometimes works.

But more often, the problem with solving the issues you personally had in your last job is they aren’t large enough.  They aren’t big enough problems to build a $100m+ business on top of.  Or, they are the wrong part of the problem.  As your last job, you saw a piece of a problem, but not the most important piece, the piece that can be truly monetized.

It definitely helps a lot if you experienced the problem you are solving at your last company.

But don’t let your seeming “domain expertise” blind you to if you are attacking a problem from the right, and most importantly, large enough angle.
